Old Blueys Day, first home game of the season and the Wal Scollen cup meant there was a lot to play for as the team took to the field against the Vikings this week. And having taken the win against Queanbeyan last week the group were feeling confident in their roles and the style of game they needed to play.

Through the first 40 minutes of the game Royals had the lions share of possession and pressed the Vikings hard through some solid ball running, which paid dividends as Harry Quinlan found his way across the chalk twice. But it was Royals defensive efforts throughout the half that really set the stage with Vikings pressing hard in the latter stages of the half and only able to put a penalty conversion on the board as Royals repeatedly blunted their attacking raids. Half time saw Royals ahead 15-3.

Following the half time break Royals we’re first to update the score with Connal McInerney dotting down off the back of a Royals maul. But this seemed to set the Vikings in gear, and as Rodney Iona directed play and put them through to narrow the lead.

But with Jamie Bodman joining the game and quickly making his mark by scoring what was to be the final Royals points of the game, the Royals benches were cleared and reserves took to the field to get a piece of the action in what was a great day for the club.

Well done to all grades on the weekend and thank you to all the ‘old blueys’ who came out to cheer this week. Your support was well received by those on the field and is a hallmark of the culture of the club we all love to play for.

Next week we take in the Western Districts Lions at their home in Jamison. Hope to see you there.
