Match report | Round 5

Those truly wet rugby games always tend to hold a place in the memory, and how favourably they’re recalled is always dependent on the result. Unfortunately for Royals this week, a one point loss had most of the boys coming from the park with their head down and wishing they could put this game well behind them.

A close result is a fair representation of the performance in tough conditions from both teams and in the end discipline was the deciding factor. Despite the challenges with handling, Royals had multiple passages of play through which they were able to put the Gungahlin defence under pressure. Oscar Waites in his first grade debut put on a standout showing with strong ball running and solid defence, and he was well supported by Lincoln Smith who repeatedly broke the line scoring 2 of Royals tries for the day. Zac Ross covered and organised well from full back and kept Royals in the match through to the final whistle. But it was a late lapse in focus that saw us penalised in the dying minutes, allowing Gungahlin to convert a penalty that gave them the win.

This coming Friday night we’ll take on Queanbeyan under lights in Queanbeyan. Off the back of a win over Wests last week Queanbeyan will be a tough opposition, as they always are when playing at home. It would be great if we could get as much support on the sidelines to help drown out the cheers of the Queanbeyan supporters. Hope to see you there.
