John I Dent Cup 2024

Round 1 March report

A first round match up against last years premiers had the pundits backing the Eagles to take the win. But Royals had prepared well through the off season and were able to get out to an early lead and then hold that lead throughout the match, despite Gungahlin having the majority of possession and field position.

Lincoln Smith and Pedro Rolando did the majority of Royals scoring with Linc crossing the chalk twice and Pedro converting opportunities from across the breadth of the field. But this was a true team effort, and everyone played their role in securing this first up win. Set piece was strong thanks in particular to Harry Vella’s efforts at loose head and Tom Iles in the line out. And our forward pack dealt well with a committed Eagles attacking line with Liam Bowron forcing turnovers with some bone rattling tackles.

Special mention to Tom Fraser and Joey Henry for making their first grade debut in the blue and white- we’re anticipating that we’ll see a lot more of you both at this level into the future.

Next week we face the Vikings at Phillip for the Wal Scollen cup. We never need a reason to try to get over the Vikings, but a win in our first home game in our 75th year would certainly be something to savour. We hope to see a big crowd down at Phillip cheering us on.
