On one of the most bitterly cold days we’ve seen so far this year Royals headed across the border to take on Queanbeyan in their own backyard. Aside from the cold, it quickly became apparent Royals were keyed in and ready for the challenge crossing the try line for the first time in the third minute of the game, and then following that up with another five tries in the first half alone. And with Pedro knocking over every conversion attempt on offer, the Whites never really got an opportunity to get into this match.
This week our forwards dominated set piece and also converted that dominance into points scoring six tries in total, four of which by way of our front row. But the backs certainly weren’t just making up numbers with several attacking raids launched from deep in our own defensive quarter freeing up one of our back three to turn Queanbeyan around and give the team the field position and momentum that turns into points.
Standout this week was Oscar Waite with his typical hard work that challenges the defensive line. Joe Winfield orchestrated well and obviously appreciated the time and space provided by a dominant forward pack, and Joey Henry made the most of his opportunities with ball in hand and cover defence.
The final score was a fair reflection of the game with Royals run out winners at 56-24.
This week’s match at Phillip against Uni precedes our 75th gala celebrations and should be an occasion in and of itself. The Owls had an unexpected win over the Eagles last week, and despite their current position on the ladder are not a team to be taken lightly.
