Round 10 – Match Reports

After suffering our first loss, second grade were keen to get back on the winners list in our second outing to Campese Oval.
canberra royals rugby union 377

This week we’re sorry to report another loss to the Queanbeyan 5-22, and while this wasn’t our strongest showing of the season, there were patches of play that were outstanding and clearly demonstrate that we have the capability needed. We just need to work on connecting some of those patches together and build pressure. Rory Scott demonstrated his class throughout the game and put in some massive efforts in defence, one of which saw him chase back and wrap up a Whites attacker, holding him up at the line and running into the goal post in the process. Those there on the day say the posts at QBN have never before stood as straight as they do now, such was the force with which Rozza hit them. Despite playing with only one eye open and one functioning calf muscle, Ethan Rokoura also punched well above his weight in the defensive stakes this week, and to be fair, he had to. We didn’t seem to get much of the ball this week and QBN came hard at us through the middle. Tom Hallam was also calm under pressure and should be feeling more than a little proud of his performances over the past few weeks. Sauce has been playing some great rugby and we’re fortunate to have him in the team, he’s a pleasure to be around. Harry Quinlan put in a notable performance, not so much for the pass he threw that was intercepted (we won’t mention that), but more for his hard hitting defence and great line running. Next week we manage to play a game at home, so please consider coming out and cheering for the boys as we take on the Owls. We’d love to see you there and have your support through the final round of the season. Points this week: 3- Rory Scott 2- Ethan Rokoura 1- Tom Hallam and Harry Quinlan

2ND-GRADE MATCH REPORT

After suffering our first loss, second grade were keen to get back on the winners list in our second outing to Campese Oval. Further changes included a new set of props, congrats to Twash on 250 club games and Deacon on his starting debut in two’s. The boys started with plenty of intent and threatened on numerous occasions with several last passes not going to hand. Off the back of some good scrum and lineout work we had plenty of possession, however were unable to put any points on the board. This seem to leave us a bit flustered and rushing plays resulting in a number of turnovers. Queanbeyan took what was really their only opportunity in the half to go into the break 7-0 up.

The second half featured more of the same play, with some good phase play and direct running being foiled by a loose pass or mistake, meaning we were never able to settle into our game plan. This enabled Queanbeyan to stay in the game and increase the lead to 12-0 with another try. Things finally clicked in the final five minutes with the ball finding space and Liam S and Chris Russell getting over for tries out wide. 12-10 with only a minute or two to go. We pressed right to the end, but were unable to come up with the win and only thoughts of what if, had we played the full seventy like we played the last ten. Thanks to our reserves and congrats to Matt Galvo on a two’s debut, well done to our point getters Liam M (3), Liam B (2) and Andy Ball/Deacon (1).
