Canberra Royals Future Sustainability
- Proposed new community facilities at Phillip Enclosed Oval
The Canberra Royals Rugby Football Club has grown with Canberra during its seventy-one-year history and considers itself to be an integral part of the Woden Valley, Weston Creek and more recently the Molonglo communities.
Recent developments in the Woden/ Weston/ Molonglo area have presented the club with new challenges and it appointed a small group of Life Members to identify issues relating to Royals future sustainability.
The Life Members’ group has consulted closely with Local Assembly Members, Federal MP’s, key ACT Government representatives and other sports groups over the last couple of years in developing a proposal for new community facilities at the Phillip Enclosed Oval.
The proposal includes women’s change rooms with adult change facilities and associated amenities, a gym and storage area, as well as a kiosk and offices which can be used for player rehabilitation and sports related activities.
The two story facility will also provide a pavilion including a kitchen and bar that will accommodate sports and community functions.
This proposal generated a great deal of interest and support within the Royals community when presented at Royals 70th Anniversary in July 2019.
ACT Labor announced its commitment on 2 October 2020 to developing new community facilities as part of a substantial upgrade of the Phillip Enclosed Oval. ACT Labor has committed $7.5 million for major improvements including a new pavilion, upgraded grandstand and lights and additional parking. Details of Labor’s commitment are available above.
The Canberra Liberals have also written to the Royals Rugby President confirming their commitment to provide $4 million to enhance Phillip Enclosed Oval as part of the vision for a vibrant sports hub for the community. Details of the Canberra Liberals commitment are available above.
This bi-partisan political support will deliver first-class sporting facilities to the Woden Valley, Weston Creek and Molonglo communities.
These facilities will be for the use of Royals Rugby, Woden Valley Rams Rugby League and other community and sporting groups.
They will also enable national and international sporting events to be held at an upgraded Phillip Enclosed Oval complex.
